🌱 How to Germinate and Grow Lotus Seeds

1. Seed Scarification (Essential First Step!): Lotus seeds have an extremely hard outer coat. Use a nail file, sandpaper, or small knife to gently scratch or nick one end of each seed until you see the pale inner layer. This allows water to penetrate and triggers germination. Without scarification, seeds may take months or never germinate!
2. Soaking: Place scarified seeds in a glass of warm, clean water (25°C–30°C). Change water daily. Seeds will swell and sprout a small green shoot within 3–7 days. Discard any seeds that do not swell after 3 days — they may not be viable.
3. Container Selection: Use a wide, shallow container — a large pot, bucket, barrel, or dedicated water garden container with a minimum diameter of 30–45 cm and depth of 20–30 cm. No drainage holes needed — Lotus grows in standing water!
4. Growing Medium: Fill the container with 10–15 cm of heavy clay soil or loam (not potting mix — it floats!). Add a layer of sand on top to keep the soil settled. Do not use regular potting soil or cocopeat.
